Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Unemployment Compensation
1. How do I file for unemployment compensation?
There are two ways to file for unemployment compensation in Alabama. The first is online at www.dir.alabama.gov. The second is to call 1-. You can also receive assistance in filing at any local Career Center. There is a listing of Career Centers at www.dir.alabama.gov and at www.joblink.alabama.gov.
2. What information do I need?
You will need your social security number, your driver license number, and banking information (routing and account numbers).
*If you are filing for DUA (Disaster Unemployment Assistance), you will need your 2010 tax return information.
3. When will I receive my benefits?
Most people will receive their benefits within 21 days. The fastest way to receive benefits is by electing the direct deposit option rather than the debit card option.
4. I normally don’t qualify for unemployment compensation, but am out of work because of the disaster. Can I get help?
Yes. In many cases, people who do not qualify for regular unemployment compensation benefits will qualify for DUA. If you think you MAY be eligible for ANY kind of unemployment compensation benefits, file a claim.
Examples of people who may be eligible for DUA but not regular UC:
*Self-employed individuals
*Individuals who were injured AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE STORM and are now unable to work
*Individuals who became the breadwinner in the family because of a death DUE TO THE STORM

ON-THE-JOB REIMBURSEMENT FUNDS FOR EMPLOYERS
The Alabama Career Center System is working with employers and job seekers in an effort to put people back to work that have been affected by the economy or the oil spill. Alabama has received a National Emergency Grant (NEG) that offers up to 90% reimbursement of wages if employers are willing to hire and train eligible job seekers.
This OJT opportunity is for small businesses with 1 – 50 full-time employees. The employee must have been displaced on or after January 1, 2008, and have been unemployed for a period longer than 17.87 weeks. The minimum wage rate for the grant is $9.00 per hour.
