More Debris Removal Info: Operation Clean Sweep

From the Tuscaloosa County Public Works Department:

FEMA has identified areas in Tuscaloosa County that have suffered catastrophic or extensive damage, and are approved for Operation Clean Sweep. This is a program funded by FEMA where it has been determined that the removal from private property serves a public purpose. This debris removal is veing done in order to protect and preserve property and/or public health and safety.

To avoid the duplication of service, property owners wishing to have debris removed from their private property must provide information relating to insurance coverage and settlements. The property owner must complete a Right-of-Entry form granting access to the property for clean up.

Operation Clean Sweep is for the removal of debris from private property and does not include any demolition. A determination will have to be made on a case by case basis whether a single standing wall is a public hazard and is eligible for removal. Slabs are not considered part of debris removal.

Clean up of properties in the area of Operation Clean Sweep that are rented or have rental units on them will require the property owner to sign the Right-of-Entry and make a good faith effort to contact the renters.

There will be three locations in the county to distribute and receive the Right-of-Entry forms. Each location will be operating 12 noon to 7pm Tuesday, May 31st to Friday, June 3rd. The stations will be set up at the following locations:

  • Holt Elementary School on Crescent Ridge Road
  • Rocky Branch Road at Camp Cherry Austin Road
  • Rifle Range Road at Highway 216

Tuscaloosa County Schools LogoDear Citizens of Tuscaloosa County,

In the midst of the terrible tragedy that struck the Tuscaloosa Community on April 27th taking many lives, separating families, and destroying homes and businesses, it was and is evident that even those who lost much stood side by side with others in as much need to provide a helping hand. The Tuscaloosa Community has demonstrated, as it always does in times of crisis, its care for all of its citizens.

On behalf of the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education and all faculty and staff members of our entire system, I thank you for all of your assistance to us over the past few days as we worked to prepare a new location for our students of Holt Elementary School. The tornado that devastated portions of the entire community also rendered Holt Elementary unusable for our students. Consequently, we had to move all of the remaining, usable furniture, texts and educational supplies to the former Lloyd Wood Middle School location as quickly as possible to help our students return to a safe location to be with their teachers in a normal routine.

So many volunteers came and worked hard to prepare the Lloyd Wood classrooms, went to Holt to retrieve what they could and help the teachers gather their materials to make the school a happy, welcoming place for the children who will be returning to their new school location this week. Your help made the sad work of removing what was left of a school that has been part of the Holt Community for so many years much more bearable, and if you have seen some of the pictures of the new Holt Elementary School location, you will see happy, colorful bulletin boards that decorate the halls and classrooms, hand-made curtains, fresh coats of paint and a library already filled with Holt’s students’ favorite books.

Many, many thanks to all of you for your generous support. We couldn’t have done it without you! Our thoughts and prayers and helping hands will continue to work with yours to make Tuscaloosa as strong as it has ever been.

Sincerely,
Frank P. Costanzo, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Education
